St. Francis Regional Medical Center to offer free skin cancer screenings on May 11

Screenings provided by Advanced Dermatology & Cosmetic Institute

SHAKOPEE, Minn. (April 24, 2017) — Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), nearly five million people are treated for skin cancer each year in the United States, and unfortunately most can be prevented. Further, health disparities in cancer—which has improved but not all Americans have benefitted equally—can be reduced by expanding access to cancer screening tests, high-quality treatment and better follow-up after treatment. That’s why St. Francis Regional Medical Center is offering free skin cancer screenings on Thursday, May 11.

The screening is intended to assist the uninsured and underinsured communities. It’s being held in the 1515 Medical Office Building, Specialty Clinic, Suite 250 on the St. Francis Campus in Shakopee from 6-7:30 p.m.

The two most common types of skin cancer are basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas. They are curable but can be disfiguring and costly. The majority of skin cancers are caused by ultraviolet (UV) light. Risk factors can include but are not limited to:

  • lighter natural skin color
  • family history of skin cancer
  • personal history of skin cancer
  • history of sunburns and indoor tanning
  • skin that burns, freckles, reddens easily or becomes painful in the sun.

Look for changes in your skin, like a new growth, sore that doesn’t heal or a change in a mole. While not all skin cancers look the same, these are the most common signs.

The skin cancer screening event is provided by Advanced Dermatology & Cosmetic Institute and is by appointment only. To register, call 952/428-2712 or 952/428-2000.
